Private Rented Sector tenants could be happier

Whilst the majority of homeowners in the UK are happy with their home, tenants are less pleased with their current living situation, a new research has revealed.

The survey from TheHouseShop showed that 83% of homeowners said they were happy with their home compared to only 54% of tenants renting from private landlords.

Renters are much more likely to be less happy with their current living situation. About 21% said were either fairly unhappy or extremely unhappy, which compared to only 8% of homeowners. This shows that tenants are more than twice as likely to be dissatisfied with the way their currently living.

Nick Marr, TheHouseShop’s co-founder, explained that considering the numerous reports on rogue landlords and organisations like Shelter and Generation Rent endlessly campaigning for better standards, the results may not come as a surprise to many.

“For homeowners, the commitment to a property is much more permanent than it is for renters, and buyers will spend a lot of time and effort choosing their ideal property and carrying out improvement works over the years to perfect it,” he continued.

“Tenants, on the other hand, are rarely allowed to make even superficial changes or improvements to their homes, so it is highly unlikely that they will ever achieve the same level of happiness as home owners.”

Furthermore, the study also noticed a clear divide between older and younger generations. Those aged 55 and over were by far the happiest with their homes with 85% and they were also twice as likely to be very happy when compared to younger participants.

Those aged 25 to 34 were the least likely to be happy with how they’re currently living, with only 16% saying they were.
