Manchester is one of those cities that, regardless of period of time, always stood out. From being the epicentre of the Industrial Revolution to having one of the youngest populations in the UK, something is always going on in Manchester.
Although some of the good times were followed by darker times, over the last decade Manchester has experienced enormous growth. Here are only ten of the many good reasons why Manchester is worth your investment.
1. Popularity
Greater Manchester consists of a total of 10 different districts with over 2 mil inhabitants. It is the third most popular British city for international visitors and is often stereotyped as the “rainy city”, although its rainfall is below UK average.
2. Population
In the 10 years between 2001 and 2011, the city’s population grew by 19%, that’s three times the national average. And it is forecast to double in size by 2025.
3. From China With Love
Chinese investment in Manchester since 2013 alone accounts for a total of £2.1 billion, more than over the last 30 years combined.
Manchester is part of the Northern Powerhouse initiative. This initiative is an ambitious idea to turn the combined forces of England’s North into a power to rival that of the City of London. On top of that, Manchester is also treated as the initiative’s secret capital, getting a lot of the main focus and investment put into it.
5. Economy
The Greater Manchester economy generates £56 billion of gross value added on a yearly basis. The three key sectors are Business, Financial & Professional Services, Health & Social Care and Creative & Digital. An additional total of 110,000 jobs are predicted in Manchester by 2024.
6. MediaCityUK
MediaCityUK, located at Salford Quays, recently announced its plans to double in size over the next 10 years. It includes big production facilities for the BBC and ITV, as well as the longest running British soap “Coronation Street”. Other hit shows like “Queer as Folk”, “Life on Mars” and “Fresh Meat” are also set in Manchester.
7. Awards
Manchester was named “Property Hotspot For The Decade” in 2015 (This Is Money), it is one of the Top 10 European Business Cities (Financial Times) and one of the world’s “Most Liveable” (The Economist Intelligence Unit).
8. Universities
Manchester is home to six universities: University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan, University of Salford, University of Bolton, University of Law and University of Huddersfield Oldham Campus. And around 100,000 students, out of which 30,000 are Chinese students.
9. Nobel Prizes
Ernest Rutherford, one of the twenty Mancunian Nobel Prize winners, was the first to split the atom ever. And it happened in Manchester in 1917. In 2004, another set of Mancunian scientists made a breakthrough. This time it was the isolation of Graphene, winning Manchester yet another Nobel Prize.
10. Inventions
The Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM), nicknamed Baby, was the world’s first computer and it was created at Manchester University on 21st June 1948.
