Jet2 chief executive promises to further invest in Birmingham

From summer 2019, Jet2 plans to operate 46 different routes from Birmingham Airport, which is up from 15 when the airline first launched flights from the airport in March 2017.

In 2019, Jet2 plans to run 165 flights a week during peak times in Birmingham with 1.6 million seats on sale during the summer. In September of last year, the airline pushed to recruit over 200 ground staff, cabin crew, and flight deck personnel to be based in Birmingham.

At a special event in Seattle as Jet2 welcomed the 100th aircraft to its fleet, Steve Heapy, chief executive of the airline, stated: “The future for Jet2 in Birmingham is very bright. It’s one of our big bases with a massive catchment area and, if we are going to try new routes, Birmingham Airport is one of the key places we would try that from.”

Could more flights to Birmingham increase property investment?

Not only is Jet2 bringing jobs to Birmingham, the company is connecting the city with different parts of the world. This could have a lasting impact on the city as a whole, including the property market. Additional overseas flights coming to Birmingham could increase interest from investors in its property sector.

As seen in Manchester, overseas flights have boosted interest in the city’s property market. The flights have made it easier for potential investors, students, and tourists to reach the city. Boasting non-stop flights to and from Beijing for over two years now, Manchester’s property market has seen interest from Chinese investors skyrocket.

Birmingham is expected to continue to see growth

A recent survey revealed the number of residential units being built in Birmingham is at its highest ever recorded, while completion rates are soaring as well. Further growth is expected to come to the city from the upcoming high-speed rail link HS2, which has increased demand for city centre homes, especially among young professionals.

As Birmingham will host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, the local economy is expected to see £500 million generated due to the event, in addition to more than 1,100 accommodation units built. With numerous projects and investment coming to Birmingham, the future continues to look bright for this city in the Midlands.
