Manchester once again named the most liveable city in the UK

Manchester was ranked 38th in the 2019 Global Liveability Survey, which is 10 places higher than London, highlighting the continued demand and appeal to live and work in the north-western city.

Having outperformed London, Manchester has retained its spot as the UK’s best city to live in, an accolade the city has held every year since the the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2019 Global Liveability Survey began in 2011. The report ranks 140 of the world’s largest cities on numerous factors, including infrastructure, culture, environment and education.

The survey further highlights the continued appeal of Manchester as a place to live and work. The population continues to grow, especially among young professionals. Recent figures from JLL even revealed there has been a 117% rise in people moving to Manchester’s city centre.

Employment opportunities

It’s not just more people moving to the city – more businesses, including the headquarters of major telecommunications brand TalkTalk, are relocating to Manchester as well. As additional businesses make the move, more people are expected to move to the city for the wide range of employment opportunities.

Manchester has even been outperforming other regional cities across the UK with new job creation. Office space take-up is also at the highest level for five years, which further shows more companies are opening offices in Manchester. As the economy continues to thrive, employment growth is expected to rise even further, bringing more and more people to the city.

High-quality accommodation

With a large population of young people, Manchester is seeing a boom in the build-to-rent sector. Students and graduates are attracted to the additional amenities and standard of living that tend to come with build-to-rent accommodation. High quality homes and flats with easy access to offices, transportation and leisure facilities are in high demand, leaving plenty of opportunities for buy-to-let landlords and investors.
