South Bank in Leeds is a finalist for a 2020 Urbanism Award as one of the best neighbourhoods across the UK and Europe.
The Academy of Urbanism recently announced the 15 Great Places shortlisted in the 2020 Urbansim Awards. The winners of the five categories, including European City of the Year and The Great Town, Neighbourhood, Place, and Street, will be announced at the awards ceremony in London on 27 November.
South Bank was named a finalist for The Great Neighbourhood award alongside Manchester’s Levenshulme and Edinburgh’s Portobello.
One of the largest regeneration schemes in Europe
Boasting a prime location in Leeds city centre, South Bank is seeing significant regeneration with thousands of new homes and job opportunities coming to the neighbourhood, which continues to attract more people and investors to the area.
Leeds City Council has set forth a regeneration framework that aims to double the size of the city centre by transforming South Bank. As one of the biggest regeneration schemes in Europe, the proposals aim for the area to provide 35,000 jobs in a range of industries and at least 8,000 homes. This will help the city keep up with the increasing demand of people wanting to live and work in Leeds city centre.
A thriving neighbourhood
Leeds recently made it on The Times Best Places to Live in the UK 2019 list. The newspaper named South Bank’s Candle House as one of the best addresses to live in, as the thriving neighbourhood continues to increase in popularity.
South Bank is a sustainable location to create additional housing with close proximity to jobs and transportation options. There are more than 300 creative and digital businesses clustered in the area. Additionally, the opening of the southern entrance to Leeds Station directly serves South Bank.
Further housing and investment growth are expected to come to Leeds city centre to keep up with increasing demand, especially in the strategic South Bank area. As Leeds City Council’s regeneration frameworks continues to transform the neighbourhood, it will become an even more appealing area to live and invest in.
