Potential development of former Leeds International Pool site

Leeds City Council has put up the old Leeds International Pool site for sale and are looking for developers interested in building mixed-use schemes, including retail, leisure, commercial, and hotel options.

Currently used as two car parks, the former Leeds International Pool site, located on Lisbon Street, is 1.2 hectares and boasts a central location in the heart of the city’s business district. The pool was built in the 1960s but closed in 2017 and was then demolished in 2009.

Martin Farrington, Leeds City Council’s director of city development, said: “This Lisbon Street site occupies a prime position among many of the city’s top financial, legal and professional services employers within our core business district, which makes it a very desirable space and development opportunity. To meet the growing demand for Grade A office space in the city centre, we are pleased to announce our proposal to invite formal competitive bids for the site.”

The old Leeds International Pool site was previously supposed to be turned into a 24-storey apartment block, however, the plans were abandoned in 2010. Now, Leeds City Council wants to sell the site to a developer interested in building high-rise Grade A office space.

Development in Leeds

With increasing demand, Leeds has room for 20,000 more homes in the city centre and further development. As many parts of the city are seeing regeneration, further development is underway.

Farrington stated: “Leeds is a city that delivers, as shown by our ever-growing investment programme, which is one of the largest in the UK. We are determined to continue to bring the absolute best investors, operators and businesses here so that investment in Leeds not only boosts the economy but also helps create new and better jobs and offers opportunities for all in the city through inclusive growth.”

We are seeing a tremendous number of new schemes, developments and regeneration projects now progressing which is hugely attractive to major organisations looking to invest in our city.
