This brings the total fall since 2008, when the country&#8217;s protracted recession began, to a whopping 41.8%.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2018\/04\/13\/greek-revival-self-build-investment-opportunities-to-create-island-homes\/\">property market<\/a> as a whole has been hit by taxes imposed in order to plug budget deficits, a tight credit market and a jobless rate that is hovering around 23% \u2013 the highest in the 19-nation euro zone.<\/p>\n<p>National Bank economist Nikos Magginas commented<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Uncertainty related to the completion of a bailout review that prevailed in the first quarter, and continued deleveraging by banks, [has] weighed on the property market.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Greece actually has one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/01\/09\/home-ownership-overestimated-think-tank-reveals\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">highest homeownership rates in Europe<\/a>, meaning that property accounts for a big chunk of household wealth across the nation.
