{"id":8983,"date":"2018-01-03T10:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-01-03T10:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.buyassociation.co.uk\/?p=8983"},"modified":"2018-01-03T10:00:23","modified_gmt":"2018-01-03T10:00:23","slug":"south-west-sees-biggest-house-price-rise-of-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-us\/news\/south-west-sees-biggest-house-price-rise-of-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"South-west sees biggest UK house price rise of 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last year, house prices in the UK climbed by a modest 2.7%, according to research by Halifax, but the picture couldn&#8217;t be more different in the south-west of England.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As house price growth stuttered towards the end of 2017, the Gloucestershire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/10\/12\/something-water-uk-spa-towns\/\">spa town<\/a> of Cheltenham came out on top with a huge 13% leap in house prices over the course of 2017 &#8211; almost five times the national average.<\/p>\n<p>This meant average house prices in the town increased by \u00a336,033 last year, bringing the strongest market away from the capital, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/12\/04\/mainstream-uk-property-prices-expected-rise-just-1-percent-2018\/\">many experts predicted<\/a>. According to Office for National Statistics data that was released last year, the Cotswold District Council area in Gloucestershire saw house prices soar by a reported 16.2% on average.<\/p>\n<p>Halifax results put the south-west coastal town of Bournemouth in second place with an average house price rise of 11.7%, followed by Brighton with 11.4%.<\/p>\n<h4>Spreading the wealth<\/h4>\n<p>Areas of London featured lower down the top-20 list, with Newham the capital&#8217;s best performer in fifth place with a 10.2% increase, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/11\/23\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-london-housing-market-east-london\/\">Redbridge<\/a> in 15th position with 7.7% &#8211; the same percentage rise also seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/11\/15\/what-you-need-to-know-london-housing-market-north\/\">Barnet<\/a> in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>Halifax\u2019s managing director Russell Galley said: &#8220;Unlike last year, the top performers are not exclusive to London and the South East, with the top spot now belonging to Cheltenham in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/11\/20\/more-cornwall-ban-second-homes-cameron-buys-2m-holiday-pad\/\">south-west<\/a>, and towns in East Anglia, East Midlands, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2018\/01\/17\/smaller-properties-biggest-house-price-rise-hitting-first-time-buyers\/\">north-west<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/12\/14\/second-homebuyers-wales-might-need-act-quickly\/\">Wales<\/a> and Yorkshire and the Humber also making the list.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the list, Perth in Scotland saw house prices drop by 5.3%, while Stoke-on-Trent in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/10\/27\/city-englands-west-midlands-not-middling\/\">West Midland<\/a>s suffered a fall of 4% and Paisley, another Scottish town, had a 3.6% decline.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, house prices in the UK climbed by a modest 2.7%, according to research by Halifax, but the picture couldn&#8217;t be more different in the south-west of England.
