Nationwide, however, think this may still be an adjustment to the rush to buy prior to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2016\/11\/02\/one-four-property-sales-uk-buy-let-second-home\/\" target>stamp duty increase<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2016\/08\/11\/how-buy-sell-property-post-brexit-infographic\/\" target>buying a house<\/a> is quite expensive relative to income, low interest rates have made them more affordable. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The steady decline in borrowing costs over the same period has helped to lessen the impact on affordability for homebuyers,&#8221; said Robert Gardner, Nationwide&#8217;s chief economist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indeed, the typical mortgage payment expressed as a share of average take-home pay is little changed over the period, and is still in line with the long-run average.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"YyF3CT7kQp\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2016\/10\/25\/mortgage-tax-relief-changes-wont-stop-landlords\/\">Mortgage tax relief changes won\u2019t stop landlords<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Mortgage tax relief changes won\u2019t stop landlords&#8221; &#8212; BuyAssociation Group\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2016\/10\/25\/mortgage-tax-relief-changes-wont-stop-landlords\/embed\/#?secret=Y91FRr62zW#?secret=YyF3CT7kQp\" data-secret=\"YyF3CT7kQp\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mr Gardner also pointed out price differences across the country, adding: &#8220;It is important to note that there is significant variation across the regions in terms of affordability.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The cost of servicing the typical mortgage as a share of take-home pay is now above its 2007 peak in London and above its long-run average in the outer metropolitan and outer south-east regions.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, housing appears far more affordable in northern England, Wales and Scotland.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The typical home in Britain now costs six times the annual salary, regardless of any house price inflation, Nationwide revealed.
