In a worst case scenario is can lead to serious health problems.<\/p>\n<p>Problems described by tenants vary from anything like a broken window or hot water outage to even leaks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/11\/09\/landlords-beware-prepare-tenant-protection-eviction\/\">dangerous electricals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Landlords in the private rented sector (PRS) have a legal responsibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/02\/21\/uk-homeowners-renovation-decoration-ups-price-home\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fix problems within a reasonable time frame<\/a>. The amount of time they get to fix an issue depends on the severity of the issue and can range from 1 month to only 24 hours (for the most serious cases).<\/p>\n<p>Findings, however, reveal that renters aren\u2019t holding their landlords as accountable as they should. In a report called \u201cIt\u2019s broke, let\u2019s fix it\u201d, the tenant\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2018\/02\/26\/evicted-no-reason-truth-behind-section-21-notices\/\">fear of being evicted<\/a> has been named as the main reason for this.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that about 57% of tenants who could be compensated (meaning they\u2019ve waited longer than they have to and should be receiving financial compensation) explained that they chose not to because they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/02\/20\/tenants-afraid-losing-homes\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">afraid of losing their home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to that, another 51% shared concerns that their landlord may increase their rent if they didn\u2019t stop complaining.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens Advice is now calling for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/12\/12\/overcomplicated-housing-ombudsman-replaced-single-body\/\">better protection<\/a> against being evicted without a solid reason. They ask for new bodies to be introduced into the PRS to regulate the relationship between landlord and tenant.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"OludUg6xAn\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/05\/22\/majority-uks-landlords-tenants-like\/\">Majority of UK\u2019s landlords and tenants like each other<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Majority of UK\u2019s landlords and tenants like each other&#8221; &#8212; BuyAssociation Group\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/05\/22\/majority-uks-landlords-tenants-like\/embed\/#?secret=Ajgj2ggjFl#?secret=OludUg6xAn\" data-secret=\"OludUg6xAn\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Gillian Guy, Citizen Advice\u2019s chief executive, commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRenters should be able to ask for repairs to their home without fear of retaliation. Homes in poor condition are the most common private rented sector issue people turn to Citizens Advice for help with.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIssues such as broken fittings, faulty electricals or leaks can make life hard for renters and can even lead to ill health. But renters aren\u2019t pursuing their rights to repair because they are worried their landlord will put up their rent or evict them. To add to this, formal routes to redress aren\u2019t being used either because they\u2019re too difficult and expensive,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRent is the most expensive costs households face, but protections for renters simply don\u2019t reflect this. The new Government needs to make it easier for people to have their rights enforced when their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/01\/17\/propertys-condition-important-50-british-renters\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">home is in poor condition<\/a>.
