The<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>mock-up of a\u00a0<\/span><\/b>flood risk development scheme for Preston and South Ribble is expected to protect about 3,600 residential properties and more than 300 businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

With a goal of lowering the flood risk for those in\u00a0<\/span>Preston<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Riversway up to<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0M6 and Higher Walton,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>proposal<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0include flood walls and embankments in<\/span>\u00a0various<\/span>\u00a0strategic locations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The new flood defence scheme has been developed by The Environment Agency, Lancashire County Council, and additional partners.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The need for new defences<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in Preston<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Currently, t<\/span>he flood defences in place\u00a0<\/span>for River Ribble\u00a0<\/span>were built at different points between the 1920s and 1980s and are needing to be replaced.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Some<\/span>\u00a0homeowners and businesses in\u00a0<\/span>PR postcodes<\/span><\/a> have found it expensive to get insurance<\/span>\u00a0for their\u00a0<\/span>properties<\/span><\/a>, even in locations that haven\u2019t had a flood in 50 years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the surrounding area, the<\/span>\u00a0biggest number of\u00a0<\/span>addresses considered to have a high risk of flooding are located in postcodes starting with PR2, which\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0mainly around Preston\u2019s dock estate and the suburb Ashton.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>When the flood defence scheme\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>completed, it is expected to help\u00a0<\/span>Preston\u2019s property market<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>with the expectation of it becoming<\/span>\u00a0easier to get home insurance and mortgages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project is dependent on European funding, but it has been said that it won\u2019t be affected by\u00a0<\/span>Brexit<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Hundreds of locals attended a\u00a0<\/span>recent\u00a0<\/span>drop-in information session to inspect the plans<\/span>\u00a0and offer feedback<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Works could start\u00a0<\/span>on the scheme\u00a0<\/span>this year and\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0expected to take in between five and six years to finish.
