Poll of residents of the Oxford to Cambridge Arc highlights concerns for the countryside<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

In a recent poll,\u00a0<\/span>1,500 people were interviewed\u00a0<\/span>about the proposals for a million new homes\u00a0<\/span>by 2050.\u00a0 The development will extend\u00a0<\/span>across the \u2018Arc\u2019<\/span>, an area spanning the five counties of\u00a0<\/span>Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire<\/a>, Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/span>ommissioned by<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Campaign to Protect Rural England<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(CPRE)<\/span>\u00a0and undertaken by research company\u00a0<\/span>Survation<\/span><\/i>, the poll results found that\u00a0<\/span>74 per cent of residents living in the\u00a0<\/span>Oxford-to-Cambridge A<\/span>rc are worried\u00a0<\/span>that the new proposals will have a negative impact on the countryside and local environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The development, if it is approved, will mean building on over 27,000 hectares of green<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>field and woodland, equating to an area the size of Birmingham.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

There is a local support for providing new homes in the arc, but<\/span>\u00a059 per cent of residents are resistant to the scale of the\u00a0<\/span>proposed\u00a0<\/span>house<\/span>building.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If plans\u00a0<\/span>for the Oxford-to-Cambridge Arc go head,\u00a0<\/span>82 per cent of residents\u00a0<\/span>are in favour of making housing needs of local people a<\/span>\u00a0priority<\/span>;\u00a0<\/span>74 per cent\u00a0<\/span>of pollsters believe that<\/span>\u00a0social housing is\u00a0<\/span>what the area needs most<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Local residents are calling for\u00a0<\/span>a full parliamentary select committee inquiry into the proposals to consider the potential impact on the local environment and communities, as well as the economies of other areas of the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CPRE maintains that based on recent\u00a0<\/span>projects,\u00a0<\/span>only around<\/span>\u00a018 per cent of the\u00a0<\/span>affordable homes required locally would be provided for in this growth plan<\/span>\u00a0period. The organisation warns that without formal public consultation and an environmental assessment the impact of \u201cthe government\u2019s growth at all\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>costs\u201d approach could have \u201ccatastrophic\u201d consequences for the local countryside, wildlife and environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CPRE\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Paul Miner, head of strategic plans and devolution said<\/span><\/b>: \u201cIt is<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u201cunthinkable\u201d that the government is considering such large development without assessing its impact.\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cRather than ignoring people and the environment in a rush for economic growth, consideration of the full effects on communities and the environment must be given priority. Before the government takes these proposals any further it is imperative that a Strategic Environmental Assessment is carried out, along with a full public consultation on the proposals.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Helen Marshall, director at CPRE Oxfordshire, added: \u201cMany local and national politicians are hiding behind a network of bureaucracy and grand claims to push through a massive increase in development at whatever the cost to the environment<\/span>, but<\/span>\u00a0without any guarantee that local housing needs will be met. There is clear support for greater transparency on these decisions and we challenge our MPs to respond appropriately.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
