The construction industry is breaking out trying new materials\u00a0<\/span>that work with the environment, are practical but with a design edge.\u00a0 In London\u2019s trendy\u00a0<\/span>Fitzrovia<\/span>, the architect,\u00a0<\/span>Bureau de Change\u00a0<\/span><\/i>www.b-de-c.com\/<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>has completed\u00a0<\/span>its most recent project –\u00a0<\/span>\u2018The Interlock\u2019 commissioned by the developer\u00a0<\/span>HGG<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Interlock is a mixed use building with a caf\u00e9 on the ground level and residential units over four floors<\/span>\u00a0above<\/span>, situated<\/span>\u00a0within a traditional\u00a0<\/span>London\u00a0<\/span>19<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0Century terrace<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Interlock\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u00a0proportions mirror the adjoining houses, but the front exterior and overall design pushes in a new direction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The front fa\u00e7ade is built using blue matt finished bricks that give the appearance of \u2018twisted cogs\u2019.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The newly completed building has a front exterior which plays on that of its traditional neighbours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Co-founder,\u00a0<\/span>Billy\u00a0<\/span>Mavropoulos<\/span>\u00a0at Bureau de Change said: \u201c<\/span>We were walking the line of what would be technic<\/span>ally possible.\u00a0<\/span>But through this process we found a point that was both buildable and produced the richness and movement we were trying to achieve.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The building\u2019s floorplate has been created with a staggered layout at the rear\u00a0<\/span>which results in floor size\u00a0<\/span>decreasing floor size as you\u00a0<\/span>go up a<\/span>\u00a0storey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0This clever design by<\/span>\u00a0Bureau de Change\u00a0<\/span>includes<\/span>\u00a0deep light wells and skylights throughout\u00a0<\/span>flooding the interiors<\/span>\u00a0with light.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/span>o-founder Katerina\u00a0<\/span>Dionysopoulou<\/span>\u00a0said: \u201c<\/span>We were interested in taking these very traditional proportions and in some way subverting it, like a puzzle box that seems familiar and reveals a hidden complexity that increase<\/span>s the more you interact with it.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the residential units, the interior design is kept minimal with an “elemental palette” of terrazzo bathrooms, natural stone worktops, sprayed-timber kitchens and oak floors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The trend is increasing across the design and construction industry to consider the impact on the environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Swiss paint manufacturer,\u00a0<\/span>Monopol<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Colors<\/span>\u00a0alongside Dutch architects\u00a0<\/span>UNStudio<\/span>\u00a0have developed a new paint \u2018The Coolest White\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The highly reflective paint will reduce the proportion of heat a building absorbs and cool down cities against the effects of climate change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The aim in restricting the amount of light and heat absorbed by a building means a reduction in the need for air-conditioning<\/span>\u00a0and urban heat islands.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pr<\/span>incipal architect of\u00a0<\/span>UNStudio<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Ben van\u00a0<\/span>Berkel<\/span>\u00a0said:\u00a0<\/span>“It is undisputed that our cities are rapidly getting hotter, so we have to ask ourselves how we can stop this trend<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The Coolest White makes buildings more resilient and on the other hand it can drastically reduce the urban heat<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>load.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
