The Mayor of London\u2019s Building Homes for Londoners scheme has made its biggest pay out to date.\u00a0 The GLA has just announced an agreement with\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Newham Council to\u00a0<\/span><\/b>release<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u00a3107 million of funding for new genuinely affordable homes.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Residents of Newham are in urgent need of housing with over 5,000 families currently living in temporary accommodation and 28,000 households on the waiting list.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The funding from the Mayor of London\u00a0<\/span>Sadiq<\/span>\u00a0Khan<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0means that Newham Mayor<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Fiaz<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>can start to\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0build a minimum of 1,000 council homes\u00a0<\/span>by 2022<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and in the region of 100 in her inaugural year as part of\u00a0<\/span>her manifesto<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 Currently Mayor\u00a0<\/span>Fiaz<\/span> is ahead of her ambitious target with plans already in place to build 227 new properties starting this year funded under the Building Homes for Londoners Scheme.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Florence Road in Upton Park \u2013 award nominated social housing<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mayor Khan along with Mayor of Newham\u00a0<\/span>Rokhsana<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Fiaz<\/span>\u00a0made a special visit to the innovative development in\u00a0<\/span>Florence Road in Upton Park<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0 Completed in 2016 the former nursery building has been transformed into seven social rented three bedroom properties<\/span>.\u00a0 Seven families on the council waiting list were able to move into the development, which was financed through Right to\u00a0<\/span>Buy<\/span>\u00a0receipts, borrowing and contributions from section 106.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Design conscious\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortlisted for a prestigious housing design award, Florence Road is leading the way in exemplary urban design. Bell Phillips the architects<\/span>\u00a0created a central light well and a roof terrace into each three storey building.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nMayor\u00a0<\/span>Fiaz<\/span>\u00a0said: \u201cIt was great to welcome the Mayor of London to Newham and show him the human impact this funding will have on the lives of<\/span>\u00a0so many families here. Having\u202f<\/span>access to genuinely affordable quality housing has made a drastic difference to the lives of these families. It is not just a roof over their head \u2013 it is about providing stability so families can put down proper roots and turn bricks and mortar into homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the housing crisis in London and Newham in particular, this is no time for complacency. We need to explore every possible avenue available to us to ensure we are maximising the number of genuinely affordable homes it is possible for us to deliver.\u00a0<\/span>Sadiq<\/span>\u00a0has recognised our ambition and rewarded us with the highest grant in London so now it is essential that we deliver these homes at pace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
