{"id":2734,"date":"2017-05-09T07:00:17","date_gmt":"2017-05-09T06:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.buyassociation.co.uk\/?p=2734"},"modified":"2023-09-29T10:24:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T09:24:56","slug":"greater-manchester-mayor-appointed-mean-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/news\/greater-manchester-mayor-appointed-mean-housing\/","title":{"rendered":"Greater Manchester Mayor Appointed: What does it mean for housing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Friday 5th May, Labour\u2018s Andy Burnham was announced the Mayor of Greater Manchester after an election that could prove to be vital to residents, yet seemed to pass many by.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/06\/manchester-ahead-london-ranking-top-global-cities-house-price-growth\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Manchester<\/a> &#8211; accounting for Manchester, Salford, Stockport, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2018\/01\/29\/premier-league-properties-how-house-prices-fare-football-towns\/\">Trafford<\/a>, Bury, Bolton, Wigan, Rochdale, Oldham and Tameside &#8211; was first to agree upon a devolution deal with George Osborne in 2014, prompting Whitehall to devolve powers on fire and policing, housebuilding, skills and transport. The region was also first to gain combined responsibility for health and social care budgets, amounting to \u00a36bn for 2.8 million residents.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"kWhKdz1F8e\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/28\/even-greater-manchester-north-top-5-transport-improvements-know\/\">An even greater Manchester? The North&#8217;s Top 5 Transport Improvements you should know about!&#8221; &#8212; BuyAssociation Group\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/28\/even-greater-manchester-north-top-5-transport-improvements-know\/embed\/#?secret=666x5KsDpy#?secret=kWhKdz1F8e\" data-secret=\"kWhKdz1F8e\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Burnham &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/03\/12\/property-investment-england-focus-north-west\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">North West<\/a> born, long term Labour MP and Cambridge University graduate &#8211; won the election in what proved to be a landslide victory, with a pitch almost entirely dedicated to resolving local difficulties and cutting ties with Westminster in order to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham put his success down to a determination to understand and combat local challenges, constructing a manifesto centred around the problems faced in local communities. In addition to reducing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/01\/18\/commuter-town-pays-for-season-ticket-in-days\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">transport fares<\/a> for young people, he has promised to contribute 15% of his wage to homelessness, an amount which has been matched by a number of organisations since.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public thought about who they wanted to be mayor of Manchester\u201d, Burnham reflected.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey did not use this as a proxy for the general election. This was hard won. I did not just stroll around Westminster and then think I would go to Manchester and see how I would get on there. I did a whole detailed consultation with people on the manifesto. We did not want to have the Westminster approach.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Amongst the key focuses, which included transport, health and social care, and the interests of young people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/10\/housing-clear-priority-northern-powerhouse\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">housing was a particularly prevalent topic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an anger about housing policy in Greater Manchester\u201d states Burnham, \u201cand a sense that Greater Manchester hasn\u2019t been focused enough on affordable housing. I agree, and that\u2019s got to change\u201d. As such, he has promised that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/12\/uk-house-prices-least-affordable-regions\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">more affordable housing<\/a> has been built, with a proportion reserved for those born and bred in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zs7kSLbJGZ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/05\/04\/far-east-consortium-selected-develop-10000-new-manchester-homes\/\">Far East Consortium selected to develop 10,000 new Manchester homes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Far East Consortium selected to develop 10,000 new Manchester homes&#8221; &#8212; BuyAssociation Group\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/05\/04\/far-east-consortium-selected-develop-10000-new-manchester-homes\/embed\/#?secret=P1PcXKAg4h#?secret=zs7kSLbJGZ\" data-secret=\"zs7kSLbJGZ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Time will tell whether Burnham\u2019s promises will come to fruition. However, his acknowledgement of local issues from the eyes of the community is certainly reassuring. Many of these issues would almost definitely have gone unnoticed in Westminster and by party leaders in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/25\/theresa-mays-general-election-will-impact-investor\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">general election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The devolution of these powers and budgets provides the Mayor and his cabinet with huge responsibility, but more importantly with the ability to create substantial, beneficial change to what is already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/06\/manchester-ahead-london-ranking-top-global-cities-house-price-growth\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the UK\u2019s leading and growing economies<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday 5th May, Labour\u2018s Andy Burnham was announced the Mayor of Greater Manchester after an election that could prove to be vital to residents, yet seemed to pass many by.
