And when the rising cost of housing is making more and more people insecure about their future, and about their quality of life in Ontario, we know we have to act.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With overseas nationals being increasingly blamed for rising property prices, the Canadian government felt the need to intervene. The average price in the Greater Toronto Area rose by a whopping 33% in the last 12 months, pushing the cost of a detached house up to an average of C$1.21 million (around \u00a3710,000).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"j92oOvJFlW\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/12\/uk-plans-register-foreign-property-owners\/\">UK plans register of foreign property owners<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;UK plans register of foreign property owners&#8221; &#8212; BuyAssociation Group\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buyassociationgroup.com\/en-gb\/2017\/04\/12\/uk-plans-register-foreign-property-owners\/embed\/#?secret=1tx0PZgmPh#?secret=j92oOvJFlW\" data-secret=\"j92oOvJFlW\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However Wynne was quick to point out that the revenue-neutral tax was not aimed at new Canadians, or people looking to settle in Toronto. \u201cWith this tax, we\u2019re targeting people who aren\u2019t looking for a place to raise a family, they\u2019re looking only for a quick profit or a safe place to park their money,\u201d she explained. <\/p>\n<p><strong>And those people who do pay the tax, but end up becoming Canadian citizens or permanent residents, will be eligible for a rebate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A similar tax was introduced in Vancouver in August, and it had a huge impact on the property market in the Canadian city, with sales taking a steep downturn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto is set to become the second city in Canada to impose an extra 15% tax on international purchasers.
