The Sunday Times has revealed its countrywide list of the top places to live by region, with a new entry being named the best place to live overall in the UK…

Last year’s winner, Bristol, has been knocked off its perch by the historic walled city of York in this year’s Sunday Times list, with judges looking at factors such as jobs, schools, culture, broadband speed, community spirit and shops.

Branded a “mini metropolis” by the newspaper, York has ambitions to be “one of the best-connected hubs in Europe”, and contains the “perfect mix of heritage and hi-tech” as the latest industrial revolution in the city has attracted more
young talent, businesses and working spaces to the area.

Average house prices in York are currently around £301,320 – higher than the UK national average – with annual house price growth of around 6.3%. For first-time buyers, the average property starts at around £180,290 for a flat, while a family detached home comes in at an average cost of £597,760.

Helen Davies, editor of The Sunday Times, said: “Choosing the right location to put down roots is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. We’re championing York this year in honour of its bold approach to bringing the historic city into the 21st century without losing any character or community spirit.”
