Smithfield Birmingham regeneration scheme set to transform the city centre

The Smithfield Birmingham scheme will create a new quarter in the heart of the city centre. New homes and jobs, better transport links and cultural and leisure offerings are all included in the masterplan.

The £1.9bn Smithfield Birmingham development recently reached a significant milestone as Birmingham City Council finalised a joint venture contract with Lendlease.

The vision of the scheme is to create a sustainable, green and inclusive place, putting people at the heart of the development. Work on a planning application for this development is currently underway. Once more detailed plans come forward, a public consultation will allow collaboration with the local community.

New homes and jobs

The scheme is set to become a new innovative and sustainable quarter in Birmingham. The Smithfield Birmingham development will provide over 3,000 new homes. This will create much-needed sustainable city centre living options.

Birmingham’s city centre is already one of the most important business regions in the UK. This new development also has the potential to bring forward more than 8,000 new jobs in the coming years.

Independent retail and workspaces will be included in the development, which are expected to be appealing to a mix of small, growing and large businesses. This will further lift the city’s status as a top regional business location and startup capital.

Improved transport and connectivity

This new development will be located only minutes away from the new HS2 station at Curzon Street, which is currently being built. This will bring Birmingham within an hour’s commute of a number of cities, including London, Manchester, Leeds and Preston.

The area will provide a gateway to the Midlands and the north of England with rapid connections to new opportunities. Additionally, transport will be improved in the area with integration of the Metro into the new quarter. More bus routes will come to the area. And Pedestrian and cycle routes will see improvement too.

Leisure and culture offerings

Community facilities area also a part of the masterplan. This will include a new public park and an active play area for children. The quarter will become a leisure and cultural hotspot with live performances.

Sitting along Southside’s entertainment and leisure offerings, the development will look to further strengthen Birmingham city centre’s authentic character with high-quality spaces, public art and even a major new public square.

Further regeneration

This 17-hectare development will anchor an expanded city centre and will open up wider opportunities for additional regeneration. The Smithfield Birmingham scheme will also help accelerate a wider transformation of the city. Additionally, it will support long-term social and economic prosperity within Birmingham and the wider region.

Councillor Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, says: “Smithfield Birmingham is a real once in a lifetime opportunity to create a new community in the heart of our city – and we are really excited to be working with Lendlease Europe, who have an internationally proven track record for bringing forward major developments like this.

“This £1.9bn development means jobs, homes and opportunities and Smithfield Birmingham will become a shining example of inclusive economic growth and will create a real legacy in the heart of Birmingham.”
