The first ever\u00a0<\/span>City Hall<\/span><\/i>\u00a0programme dedicated to building new council homes is to receive a \u00a310 million boost for planning and housing announced by\u00a0<\/span>Sadiq<\/span>\u00a0Khan, the\u00a0<\/span>Mayor of London<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the next four years, this multi million pound\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Home Building Capacity<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0fund will be allocated specifically to aid local authorities across London to provide over 11,000 residents with more genuinely affordable housing, including social rented and council houses.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Home Building Capacity Fund<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>funded through the Business Rates Retention Pilot<\/span>. It<\/span>\u00a0works alongside other practical support that City Hall is providing to help councils build again<\/span>.\u00a0 This includes<\/span>\u00a0the new council led Housing Forum, run by Future of London, to provide technical advice to practitioners involved in council led delivery of homes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Proactive master<\/span><\/b>plans<\/span><\/b>\u00a0across London<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Around<\/span>\u00a030 London local authorities will receive funding up to \u00a3650,000. This can be spent on building a new generation of affordable homes on small sites.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The money can be used for proactive masterplans in areas wi<\/span>th significant growth potential<\/span>\u00a0and planning for optimal density across new residential developments in a<\/span>\u00a0designated<\/span>\u00a0area.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sadiq<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Khan said<\/span>: \u201cO<\/span>ver the last eight years, central Government cuts have seen council budgets for planning and development fall by 50% in London and this has held back housing growth and particularly plans to build new council homes.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, t<\/span><\/i><\/b>he Mayor\u2019s flagship Building Council Homes for Londoners\u2019 programme<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0a<\/span><\/i><\/b>greed plans\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>to the value of over<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u00a31 billion with 27 London boroughs to\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>begin<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0building 11,000 new council homes at social rent levels by 2022.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The successful bids include a project to increase pipeline of council owned land in Ealing, a new Housing Delivery Hub in Newham, and a joint bid between Barnet and Harrow to develop a town centre planning brief.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Councillor\u00a0<\/span>Emina<\/span>\u00a0Ibrahim, Cabinet Member for Housing and Estate Renewal and De<\/span>puty Leader of\u00a0<\/span>Haringey Council<\/span><\/i>\u00a0said:\u00a0 \u201c<\/span>Despite the housing crisis that is affecting thousands of people across London and the lack of funding that we receive from Central Government, we are doing everything we can to ensure our residents get the homes they deserve. With thousands of people on the waiting list, this funding will give us the capacity to support our housing delivery team and go a long way to<\/span>\u00a0helping us deliver these homes<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mayor of London,\u00a0<\/span>Sadiq<\/span>\u00a0Khan said: \u201c<\/span>London\u2019s local authorities have seen their budgets slashed year after year through Government cuts. This has hit their services across the board and has severely hampered their ambitions to build more affordable homes<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis funding won\u2019t reverse all those cuts but it will help councils boost their teams to go much further than they otherwise could. We are going as far as we can, and it is now imperative for the\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>Government to give us significantly more investment and greater powers so we can build all the homes Londoners need.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
