R<\/span>ail fares in England and Wales will increase by 3.6% in January <\/span>next year<\/span>,<\/span> the biggest annual rise in five years,<\/span> meaning <\/span>the Capital\u2019s commuters<\/span> are facing <\/span>greater rail expense <\/span>than ever before. <\/span><\/p>\n

The rise<\/span>, which<\/span> <\/span>is set by the government and linked to July\u2019s retail price index (RPI) measure of inflation <\/span>was <\/span>announced by the <\/span>Office for National Statistics<\/span><\/a> on Tuesday<\/span>, <\/span>means that the average <\/span>annual <\/span>London rail ticket will increase by <\/span>\u00a3146. <\/span><\/p>\n

The announcement follows <\/span>hot-on-the-<\/span>heels of the Office of National Statistics\u2019<\/span>,<\/span> UK House Price Index<\/span>, which will perhaps soften<\/span> the blow of increased rail fares to key UK cities given that <\/span>house prices in the UK have increased <\/span>overall <\/span>by 4.9%<\/span> in the 12 months since June 2016<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
